Overview
This antique Delft tile depicts the Biblical scene in which Nicodemus meets with Jesus at night (John 3 verse 2).
"He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
A similar kind of tile is depicted in the book 'Bijbeltegels/Bibelfliesen by Jan Pluis' on page 422. Jan Pluis thinks it was made in the Dutch city of Makkum or Harlingen, although with today's knowledge these kind of tiles are often attributed to Rotterdam. The tile is decorated with 'ox-head' corner motifs and in a good condition with the normal superficial wear and chips. Interesting details are the burning candle on the table and the burning fireplace on the left. This was done by the painter to make clear that the happening took place at night.
