Overview
This Delft tile depicts Genesis 2 verse 7; the creation of men.
"And God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
The tile dates from around 1720 and was made in the Dutch city of Amsterdam. It is decorated with 'ox-head' corner motifs and in an excellent condition. The scene is based on an engraving by Matthäus Merian. However, on the original engraving the 'unicorn' is still a horse. It might be that the second engraving by Merian, which depicts Adam and Eve in paradise, has been the leading example for the unicorn. A photo of this engraving has been added, which clearly shows the mythical creature.
