Overview
This attractive antique Delft tile mural was made in the Dutch city of Harlingen around 1880 and consists of six tiles arranged in a 2 by 3 tile format. The mural depicts a large seated dog wearing a rope collar or chain around its neck.
The mural was painted by Barend Visser, one of the skilled tile painters working for the pottery Tjallingii in Harlingen during the second half of the 19th century. Visser is known for his stylized way of portraying animals, and this mural is a fine example of his craftsmanship. The subtle shading and confident brushwork give the dog a strong sense of presence and character.
Dogs have long been a popular subject in Delft tile production. They were often associated with loyalty, faithfulness and vigilance, making them suitable subjects for decorative tile murals.
