Overview
This antique Delft tile dates from around 1670 and was made in the Dutch city of Harlingen. It depicts a very rare scene of a monastery with two large towers. The towers are actually two large kiln, part of the pottery located in the buildings next to the monastery. In the Netherlands, monks made their own beer, but they also made bricks for buildings. The 'kloostermop', which can be translated as the 'monastery brick', was made by monks throughout the middle ages. Later on they made more refined types of bricks. On the left side of the scene two monks are depicted.
The tile is decorated with 'spider' corner motifs and is in a good condition with professional restorations mainly on the lower left corner and slightly along all the sides.
