Overview
Beautifully hand-painted Dutch antique wall tiles depicting birds in vibrant polychrome colours, dating from the 17th century (c. 1630). This charming set consists primarily of birds perched on branches or small plants, each painted with shades of blue, yellow and subtle earthy tones. One tile in the set depicts a flower instead of a bird, adding a small decorative variation within the composition. All tiles are decorated with the 'classic' ox-head corner motif. The tiles originate from the same firing and were most likely produced by a single pottery in the Dutch province of Zeeland.
Use and applications
Originally adorning fireplaces, these tiles remain perfectly suited for the same uses today. The wide variety of scenes, make them equally at home in restoration projects, classic interiors, or as a decorative feature wall, panel, or accent installation in a more contemporary setting. Wherever used, they bring a sense of history, colour and refinement to the space.
Condition and preparation
All tiles are reclaimed antiques and are prepared for reuse. They have been cleaned, desalinated and oot residues have been removed. Each tile has been inspected to ensure it meets our quality standards and is suitable for installation.
Tile variety and stock
This set consists of twelve tiles depicting various birds, each rendered in a slightly different pose or composition. The hand-painted decoration and polychrome palette create a lively and decorative ensemble. As these tiles originate from a single firing and form a complete set.
Complementing tiles
These tiles are best showcased when used together as a complete set, as the consistent painting style and 'ox-head' corner motifs create a harmonious wall composition. In addition, pairing them with plain white antique tiles (witjes), both first and second quality, can provide visual balance within a larger tiling design.
Tile size
Each tile measures approximately 13 × 13 cm (5.1” × 5.1”) and 1 cm / 0.4” thick. As the tiles are handmade and antique, slight variations in size and thickness are to be expected and contribute to their authentic character.
