Overview
Beautifully hand-painted Dutch antique wall tiles depicting playful Cupids in blue, dating from the mid-17th century (circa 1660). Each tile shows Cupid engaged in a different activity, such as blowing bubbles, fishing, or shooting a bow and arrow. These charming scenes reflect the narrative style that became characteristic of Delft tile painting during the 17th century. The tiles are finished with the 'ox-head' corner motif, one of the most recognisable corner decorations used in early Delft tile production. Each tile is hand-painted, giving every wall composition a distinctive and authentic historic character.
Condition and preparation
All tiles are reclaimed antiques and are fully prepared for reuse. They have been cleaned, desalinated and any soot residues have been removed. Each order is hand-selected to ensure a harmonious appearance in colour tone, glaze and surface character. If your project requires cut tiles, designated tiles with more visible imperfections can be supplied at a reduced price, helping preserve intact historical pieces.
Tile variety and stock
This collection consists of a variety of Cupid scenes, each depicting a different playful activity. The tiles share a cohesive 17th-century style and are unified by the 'ox-head' corner motifs. Representative images give a clear impression of the range of scenes available. Availability is limited, but sufficient tiles remain for a small and distinctive installation. For the most up-to-date stock levels, please refer to the quantity indication (pcs) shown on the right-hand side of this page.
Complementing tiles
These tiles are best showcased when used together, as the 'ox-head' corner motifs align to create a coherent and historically consistent wall composition. They can also be combined with other 17th-century Delft tiles depicting 'ox-head' corner motifs. In addition, pairing them with plain white antique tiles, both first and second quality, can introduce visual balance and framing within a larger wall design.
Tile size
Each tile measures approximately 13 x 13 cm (5.1” x 5.1”) and 1 cm / 0.4” thick.. As the tiles are handmade and antique, slight variations in size and thickness are to be expected and contribute to their authentic character.
