Overview
This wonderful antique Delft tile dates from the first half of the 17th century, approximately 1640. It shows a winged figure, most likely Cupido, riding a whale or similar kind of sea creature. There are however some remarkable characteristics that make the entire scene somewhat unclear. The winged figure is clearly wearing an eyepatch, seems to have a mustache and is depicted as quite a 'rough' figure compared to basically all variations of Cupid. The sea creature might be a whale, but as his teeth are clearly depicted and his tail does not look like that of a whale, dolphin or shark, it might very well be something else.
What we do know is that the tile is decorated with quite a rare version of the 'spider' corner motif. This corner is typical for tile factories that were actually located in the city of Delft. The tile is without restorations and in a very pure condition with some chips along the sides.
