Title: Dutch Tiles - The Philadelphia Museum of Art Condition: Second-hand; signs of use, but overall in a good condition. Do note the damaged cover.
Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, March 18 to May 13, 1984. This is the only up-to-date reference work on seventeen and eighteenth century Dutch tiles.
In 1897, when the Philadelphia Museum of Art received the bequest of fifteen eighteenth-century Dutch tiles depicting biblical subjects from the estate or Mrs. Frederick Graff, it was scarcely to be predicted that this small group of objects would prove in time to have been the modest beginning of what is now one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of tiles in this country. This Museum's dedication to the exhibition and acquisition of the decorative arts dates to its founding in 1876. The collection of Dutch furniture and objects grew steadily, emphasized by the purchase in 1928 of a fine seventeenth-century period room from a house in Haarlem, complete with a tiled fireplace, made possible by a gift of funds from Edward W. Bok. The impetus for this exhibition and its accompanying catalogue came from a wonderfully generous succession of gifts, beginning in 1979, from Mrs. Francis P. Garvan and her son Dr. Anthony N.B. Garvan, of the large and important collection of tiles acquired by Francis P. Garvan during the 1920's. Anthony Garvan's concert that the collection become available to the public and scholars for examination, research and sheer pleasure has greatly enriched this Museum. Small and practical in format, lending themselves equally well to the bold repetition of a motif (tulips, for example) or the charming variation upon a theme such as children's games, Dutch tiles decorated and protected houses from Amsterdam to Djakarta. In the study of their imagery, later generations find much to learn about the tastes, beliefs, fantasies, and amusements of those resourceful citizens of a young and enterprising republic. Influences from Italy, China and France are evident in the choise of colors or motifs in many Dutch tiles: in turn, they were exported around the world and widely copied or adapted by craftsmen of other cultures.

Antique tiles Antique tiles are handmade, so variations in color, size and texture are to be expected. Also, due to the age of the items, small chips and signs of use are common and considered to be part of antique tiles and the overall experience. Our tiles have been rinsed and cleaned intensely, making them suitable to be reused. However, we can never guarantee that all traces of sooth, salt or other forms of pollution have completely been extracted from the tiles. We expect our customers to be aware of this matter.
Color accuracy Due to the relative inconsistencies of various display monitors, the colors you see on your screen may not be a totally accurate reproduction of the actual product. We strive to make our colors as accurate as possible, but screen images are intended as a guide only and should not be regarded as absolutely correct.
