Overview
This is a beautiful antique Delft tile mural depicting Madonna and child. The mural was made around 1870 in the Dutch city of Utrecht. It depicts Madonna / Mary with baby Jesus. Interesting symbolic features are the serpent she stands on. The serpent reflects 'evil' and is clearly restrained by her. She is also standing on the crescent, which is the symbol of purity. In her right hand she holds a sceptre as a symbol of her power/authority. Baby Jesus holds the 'Globus Cruciger' (the orb and cross), which is the symbol of authority. In short; who holds it, basically holds the world in his hands. The mural is in a good condition without restorations. It has a few minor chips which can be restored on request. It has completely been prepared to be reused for tiling projects.
