Overview
This charming antique Delft tile mural was made around 1840 by the pottery Agter 't Weystraat in the Dutch city of Utrecht and consists of six tiles arranged in a 2 by 3 tile format. The mural depicts a farmer leading a dairy cow through an open landscape. While the composition appears simple at first glance, it offers an interesting glimpse into rural Dutch life during the 19th century, when livestock formed the backbone of many farming families.
The cow is clearly portrayed as a dairy cow, making it likely that the mural originally commemorated a prized animal belonging to the commissioning farmer. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, it was not uncommon for prosperous farmers to commission Delft tile murals depicting their finest livestock. Such murals celebrated animals valued for their milk production, breeding qualities or simply reflected the owner's pride in cattle farming. Even when not portraying a specific cow, these murals expressed the importance of dairy farming to the family's livelihood.
The artist has deliberately focused the composition on the interaction between the farmer and his cow. With very few distractions in the landscape, all attention is drawn to the calm relationship between the two figures. The tree in the background provides balance to the composition while allowing the beautifully painted cow to remain the central feature of the mural.
