Overview
This antique Delft tile mural was made around 1890 by the pottery Tjallingii in the Dutch city of Harlingen. The mural depicts a Dutch merchant vessel (koopvaardijschip) sailing at sea with full sails set. The ship is shown from the stern quarter, allowing details such as the rigging, decorative stern and Dutch flag to be clearly appreciated. Additional sailing vessels can be seen in the background, adding depth to the maritime scene.
Although the mural dates from the late 19th century, the vessel itself appears to have been inspired by Dutch merchant ships from the 17th and 18th centuries, the period during which the Netherlands was one of the world's leading maritime trading nations. More specifically, the ship may represent a fluyt, a characteristic Dutch cargo vessel that played an important role in the success of the Dutch Republic during its Golden Age. Delft tile manufacturers frequently looked back to these earlier ship types, celebrating the country's rich maritime history and its long tradition of international trade.
This mural is offered together with its original decorative border. The border was decorated using a transfer technique, a production method that became increasingly popular during the second half of the 19th century. Although these borders were already available as an optional addition when originally sold by the pottery, this particular mural has remained together with its accompanying border throughout its history. For this reason, we have chosen to offer it as a complete ensemble, preserving the appearance in which it would originally have been installed.

Complementing tiles
While this mural forms a beautiful decorative feature on its own, it can also be incorporated into a larger tiled wall or fireplace surround. Antique plain white Delft tiles (witjes) from the same period often complement these murals particularly well. Our specialists are happy to advise on suitable accompanying tiles and installation possibilities.
Tile size
The central mural measures approximately 26 × 26 cm (approximately 10.2 × 10.2 inches), excluding the decorative border.
If you are considering incorporating this mural into a larger tile project, we are happy to provide guidance regarding installation and layout possibilities.
