Overview
This rare pair of antique Dutch Delft tile murals dates from around 1815 and depicts two military figures in full uniform. The murals form an original pair and were painted in the Frisian city of Harlingen by Harmen Beekman, one of the most respected Delft tile painters of the early 19th century.
The figure on the left is portrayed as an infantry soldier, equipped with a flintlock musket fitted with a bayonet. He wears a military coat, cartridge pouch and a fur cap, while standing in a confident pose with his weapon at rest. The figure on the right is dressed as an officer or senior military official, carrying a sabre and wearing an elegant bicorne hat adorned with a plume. His long coat, refined attire and commanding posture contrast beautifully with the more practical appearance of the infantryman. Together, the pair offers a fascinating glimpse into military life during the years immediately following the Napoleonic era.
Both murals are in a good condition. The mural on the right has a glued and restored fracture in the top right corner plus a minor superficial restoration on the top of the lower right tile. The mural on the left has a few superficial retouches.
The murals are documented in the book 'Fries aardewerk - Harlingen - producten 1720 - 1933' on page 162. A photo in the book shows the murals in their unrestored condition (available on request).
Historical background
The year 1815 marked a turning point in European history. Following the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo, the newly established Kingdom of the Netherlands entered a period of reconstruction and national pride. Military subjects became popular decorative themes, commemorating the soldiers and officers who had served during these turbulent years.
Artistic significance
Military murals of this size and quality are considerably rarer than individual Delft tiles. What makes this pair particularly desirable is that both murals have remained together as an original set. The contrast between the infantryman and the officer creates a balanced composition, while the shared palette of deep cobalt blue unifies the pair visually.
The murals also serve as valuable historical documents, preserving details of contemporary military dress, weaponry and social hierarchy during the early decades of the 19th century. Their attribution to Harmen Beekman further enhances their importance for collectors and institutions interested in Dutch Delftware.
Complementing tiles
These murals are best complemented by our antique plain white Delft tiles in the 1st or 2nd quality. We are happy to advise on suitable layouts and the most harmonious combinations for your project.
Condition and preparation
Both murals have survived remarkably well considering their age of more than two centuries. They have been carefully cleaned and preserved, allowing the quality of the original painting to remain clearly visible. Minor signs of age and use are consistent with authentic Delft tile murals of this period and contribute to their historic character.
