Overview
This rare and beautifully preserved set of 20 original Delft wall tiles dates from around 1640 and was most likely made in Rotterdam, one of the most important Delftware production centers in the Dutch Golden Age. Each tile features a polychrome flower in shades of green, yellow, blue, and manganese. All the tiles are decorated with the iconic ox-head corner motif, which is the most characteristic design for this time period.
The tiles are all from the same firing, ensuring a harmonious glaze and tone across the entire set. They are in a good and authentic condition, with no restorations, and ready to be reused in an unique, small-scale tiling project- for example, as a backsplash, fireplace detail, or decorative panel.
Each flower is distinct and painted in the stylized manner typical of the 1640s. While some are based on botanical references and tulipomania trends of the time, others are likely imaginative compositions. Likely identifiable blooms include:
- Tulips (center row, second from left and third from right)
- Crown imperial (bottom row, third from left)
- Fritillary (third row, second from left)
- Iris (top left corner)
- Narcissus or daffodil (center row, second from right)
- Carnation or dianthus (top row, second from left)
- Star-of-Bethlehem or scilla (bottom row, second from left)
- Marigold or calendula (top row, center)
This is a museum-quality ensemble that offers a rare glimpse into 17th-century Dutch design. Perfect for collectors, interior designers, or anyone looking for a truly one-of-a-kind historic statement. The tiles come completely prepared to be reused for a small tiling project.
