Overview
This antique Delft wall tile was made between approximately 1880 and 1920 by the Van Hulst pottery in Harlingen, one of the major Dutch tile-producing cities of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The tile combines hand-painted detailing with transfer decoration, resulting in a crisp geometric pattern in Delft blue contrasted with a manganese-red central rosette. The repeating design creates a lively yet orderly rhythm, making these tiles suitable for feature walls, backsplashes, and decorative panels.
Condition and preparation
All tiles are fully prepared for reuse; carefully cleaned, desalinated and soot removed. Each order is hand-selected to ensure the best possible balance in tone, glaze and surface character. If cut tiles are needed, we can in general supply designated pieces with more visible wear at a reduced rate, helping preserve intact historical examples.
Tile variety and stock
We hold a representative selection from the same production period, showing the natural variation expected in antique hand-decorated tiles. The blue transfer pattern ranges from medium to deep Delft blue, while the manganese-red rosettes vary subtly in tone and density. The examples photographed reflect the typical appearance within the current stock.
Complementing tiles
These tiles pair well with antique witjes from around 1900. Their understated pattern works particularly well in kitchens, hallways, and bathrooms where a calm but characteristic Delft look is desired.
Tile size
Each tile measures about 13 x 13 cm (5.1” x 5.1”) and is roughly 7–8 mm (0.3”) thick. As antique handmade pieces, slight differences in size and thickness are entirely normal and part of their authentic charm.
A downloadable installation guide is available soon, explaining how to handle thickness differences and other practical details during installation.
