Overview
These antique Dutch wall tiles depict tulips within diamond-shaped frames and date from the first half of the 17th century (circa 1640). The elegant floral compositions are complemented by 'fleur-de-lis' corner motifs, creating a refined and highly decorative appearance characteristic of early Delft tile production. The tulip was one of the most admired flowers of the Dutch Golden Age and became a recurring subject in Delftware. Each tile was painted by hand, resulting in subtle variations that enhance the authentic charm of these nearly 400-year-old wall tiles.
Condition and preparation
All tiles are reclaimed antiques and are fully prepared for reuse. They have been carefully cleaned, desalinated and any soot residues have been removed. Each order is hand-selected to ensure a harmonious appearance in colour tone, glaze and surface character, making them ready for direct installation. If your project requires cut tiles, we can provide designated tiles of this type at a reduced price. These are tiles with more visible imperfections that are ideal for cutting, helping preserve intact historical pieces from unnecessary alteration.
Tile variety and stock
This collection consists of tulip motifs painted within the characteristic diamond-shaped frame. While the overall design remains consistent, small variations in brushwork and floral details give each tile its own individual character. Representative images provide a clear impression of the variation within the decoration. Both the diamond tulips and the closely related diamond fritillaria tiles are available in significant quantities. This makes these early 17th-century Delft tiles suitable for medium to larger restoration and interior design projects. For the most up-to-date stock levels, please refer to the quantity indication (pcs) shown on the right-hand side of this page.
Complementing tiles
Historically, these tulip tiles were often combined with similar tiles depicting fritillaria (Snake's Head) flowers within the same diamond-shaped composition. The combination creates a varied yet harmonious floral arrangement that reflects original 17th-century Delft tile installations. These tiles can also be combined with plain white antique wall tiles (witjes), both first and second quality, to create a balanced and timeless wall composition.
Tile size
Each tile measures approximately 13 × 13 cm (5.1" × 5.1" and 1 cm / 0.4” thick.). As the tiles are handmade and antique, slight variations in size and thickness are to be expected and contribute to their authentic character.
