Overview
Beautifully hand-painted Dutch antique wall tiles depicting fritillaria (Snake’s Head) flowers, dating from the first half of the 17th century. Each tile depicts a stylised fritillaria placed within a diamond-shaped frame, a composition that became highly characteristic of early Delft tile production. Each tile is decorated by classic 'fleur-de-lis' corner motifs, creating a refined and balanced decorative appearance. The fritillaria, known for its distinctive hanging bell-shaped flower, adds an elegant and recognisable botanical element to the composition. Each tile is hand-painted, resulting in subtle variation and an authentic historic character.
Condition and preparation
All tiles are reclaimed antiques and are prepared for reuse. They have been cleaned, desalinated and any soot residues have been removed. Each order is hand-selected to ensure a harmonious appearance in colour tone, glaze and surface character. If your project requies cut tiles, designated tiles with more visible imperfections can be supplied at a reduced price, helping preserve intact historical tiles.
Tile variety and stock
This collection consists of tiles depicting fritillaria flowers within the characteristic diamond-shaped frame. While the composition is consistent, variations in brushwork and detail give each tile its own individual character. Representative images provide a clear impression of the variety within the design. A significant quantity of these tiles is currently available, making them suitable for larger tiling projects. For the most up-to-date stock levels, please refer to the quantity indication (pcs) shown on the right-hand side of this page.
Complementing tiles
These tiles are best showcased when used together, allowing the diamond framing and corner motifs to form a harmonious and historically consistent wall composition. They were traditionally combined with similar tiles depicting tulips within the same diamond-shaped layout, creating a varied yet cohesive floral arrangement. In addition, pairing them with plain white antique tiles (witjes), both first and second quality, can introduce visual balance and structure within the overall installation.
Tile size
Each tile measures approximately 13 × 13 cm (5.1” × 5.1”) and 1 cm / 0.4” thick. As the tiles are handmade and antique, slight variations in size and thickness are to be expected and contribute to their authentic character.
