Restoring a house at the Zaanse Schans with Delft tiles
The Zaanse Schans is probably something you have heard of or maybe even visited during your stay in the Netherlands. It is a neighbourhood of Zaandam, near Amsterdam. It is known for its collection of well-preserved historic windmills and houses. When you walk around the Zaanse Schans, you will experience Holland during the 17th & 18th century. Nowadays several buildings are still being restored. One of them is known as the first 'Zaanse' working-class house, dating back from the 17th century. Thanks to Frans Wytema we are able to share this wonderful video with you that shows the restoration of the fireplace and chimney. They are using a wonderful selection of 17th century polychrome antique Delft tiles with birds and flowers. These tiles are combined with antique plain white Delft tiles that are positioned obliquely. The craftmanship that is required to get the tiles in place is well demonstrated by Bart Nieuwenhuijs and Patrick Berkhout. The restoration of the house is a project by the Elout Wytema Foundation, made possible by:
  • Provincie Noord-Holland
  • Gemeente Zaandstad
  • Het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds
  • Jan Willem Boerveldtfonds
  • De Konink-Walst Fonds
