Overview
Beautifully hand-painted Delft antique wall tiles depicting birds, insects and flowers in polychrome colours, dating from around 1640. These tiles were produced in the Dutch city of Harlingen and one of the most refined and exclusive categories within 17th-century Delft tile production. Each scene is decorated within a fine circular line and surrounded by Wanli corner motifs reflecting the strong influence of Chinese porcelain. Every tile is hand-painted, resulting in subtle variation and a richly layered wall composition.
Condition and preparation
All tiles are reclaimed antiques and are fully prepared for reuse. They have been carefully cleaned, desalinated and any soot residues have been removed. Each order is hand-selected to ensure a harmonious appearance in colour tone, glaze and surface character. If your project requires cut tiles, designated tiles with more visible imperfections can be supplied at a reduced price, helping preserve intact historical pieces.
Tile variety and stock
This collection consists of a varied selection of birds, floral compositions and insects, all executed in a cohesive early 17th-century style with matching Wanli corner motifs. Representative images give a clear impression of the richness and refinement of the decoration. Availability is significant enough to allow for small to medium-sized tiling projects. For the most up-to-date stock levels, please refer to the quantity indication (pcs) shown on the right-hand side of this page.
Complementing tiles
These tiles are best showcased when used together, as the Wanli corner motifs align to form a coherent and historically consistent wall composition. They can also be combined with other 17th-century Delft wall tiles decorated with Wanli corner motif. In addition, pairing them with plain white antique tiles (witjes), both first and second quality, can introduce visual rhythm and balance within a larger design.
Tile size
Each tile measures approximately 13 × 13 cm (5.1” × 5.1”) and 1 cm / 0.4” thick. As the tiles are handmade and antique, slight variations in size and thickness are to be expected and contribute to their authentic character.
Historical context
In the 17th century, tiles of this type were frequently used in fireplaces, often arranged in vertical pillar-like compositions on either side of the open fire. The Wanli-inspired corner motif was directly derived from designs found on Chinese porcelain. Although Dutch potters were not able to produce porcelain themselves, they incorporated porcelain-inspired motifs into their tile designs to reflect contemporary taste and international influences.
