Overview
This impressive antique Delft tile mural was made in Utrecht around 1850 and consists of 60 tiles arranged in a 10 by 6 tile format. The mural depicts a lively rural Dutch scene centred around everyday life in the countryside. On the right, a farmer appears to be negotiating the sale of a cow, while his wife watches from the doorway of the farmhouse. Their dog sits nearby, observing the scene. In the foreground, several cows graze peacefully, reinforcing the agricultural character of the composition.
On the left side of the mural, two men are shown in a small boat, attempting to catch fish in a canal that winds through the landscape. The scene is set against a typical Dutch backdrop of waterways, farmhouses and distant church towers. Together, these elements create a charming snapshot of rural life as it was remembered and celebrated in the mid-19th century.
One of the most remarkable details of this mural can be found in the background. Looking closely, a steam train can be seen crossing the landscape. Trains occasionally appear on individual Delft tiles, but we have never encountered one incorporated into a mural of this size and complexity. The inclusion of a steam train is particularly interesting as it combines traditional Dutch rural life with a symbol of technological progress and modern transportation. This small detail adds an extra historical layer to the scene and makes the mural considerably more unusual than most Dutch landscape tableaux from this period.
Another noteworthy feature is the decorative border. In most Delft tile murals, the border consists of separate border tiles surrounding the central scene. In this example, however, the border decoration was painted directly onto the outer tiles of the tableau itself. This approach required careful planning during production and results in a particularly harmonious composition in which the scene and border form a single integrated design.
