Overview

This rare set of 16 antique Delft wall tiles was made around 1630 and depicts a remarkable variety of animals painted in polychrome colours. The scenes include a horse, several dogs in different poses, hares, foxes, deer, a bird perched amongst foliage, a donkey, a bear and other lively animal subjects. Painted with a recurring palette of blue, orange, green and yellow tones, the tiles form a cohesive ensemble that reflects the artistic traditions of the early 17th century.

What makes this set particularly rare is the combination of colourful polychrome animal scenes with large blue ox-head corner motifs. While early 17th-century Delft tiles decorated in polychrome colours are already uncommon, examples featuring these prominent large ox-head corners are especially desirable. This larger variation of the ox-head motif is characteristic of the first half of the 17th century and creates a vivid contrast with the lively scenes in the centre.

This offering consists of a complete set of 16 matching tiles, most of which originate from the same firing and, at the very least, from the same pottery. The consistent painting style, colour palette and overall appearance support this conclusion. The price shown applies to the complete set of 16 tiles, which are offered exclusively as one purchase.

Condition and preparation

All sixteen tiles are in an unrestored and pure condition. Naturally, after nearly 400 years of existence, minor traces of age and use can be found throughout the set. The tiles have not undergone restoration and retain their original appearance, with these signs of age contributing to their authenticity and historic character.

Tile variety and stock

This set consists of sixteen unique animal scenes, each hand-painted with its own individual character and composition. Together they form a highly decorative group that showcases the variety and craftsmanship of early 17th-century Delft tile production. Due to the completeness of the set, these tiles are offered exclusively as one collection and are not available individually.

Complementing tiles

This exceptional set can be displayed as an individual collection or incorporated into a larger installation. Their polychrome decoration and large ox-head corner motifs combine particularly well with plain white Delft tiles or with other early Delft animal and figure tiles from the same time period. Our specialists are happy to advise on suitable combinations and layout possibilities.

Tile size

Each tile measures approximately 13 × 13 cm (5.1" × 5.1") and 1 cm / 0.4” thick. As these are handmade 17th-century wall tiles, slight variations in size, thickness and shape are to be expected and contribute to their authentic character.

  • Product disclaimer

    Antique tiles
Antique tiles are handmade, so variations in color, size and texture are to be expected. Also, due to the age of the items, small chips and signs of use are common and considered to be part of antique tiles and the overall experience. Our tiles have been rinsed and cleaned intensely, making them suitable to be reused. However, we can never guarantee that all traces of sooth, salt or other forms of pollution have completely been extracted from the tiles. We expect our customers to be aware of this matter.

    Color accuracy
Due to the relative inconsistencies of various display monitors, the colors you see on your screen may not be a totally accurate reproduction of the actual product. We strive to make our colors as accurate as possible, but screen images are intended as a guide only and should not be regarded as absolutely correct.
