Overview
These antique Delft wall tiles feature the Stars ornament and were mainly produced between 1870 and 1900, primarily by Pottery Van Hulst in the Dutch city of Harlingen. Painted in the traditional Delft colour combination of blue and manganese, the design clearly reflects the transition from fully handmade tile production to the early industrialisation of the Dutch tile industry.
The blue star at the centre of each tile was applied using a transfer-printing technique, while the surrounding ornamentation was finished by hand. This combination of mechanical and hand-painted decoration is characteristic of the late 19th century, when Dutch potteries began introducing new production methods while still preserving traditional craftsmanship.
Each tile displays a central blue star, while the corners combine with neighbouring tiles to form a second, larger star pattern across the wall surface. The small floral motifs in the corners are closely related to the traditional spider corner motif.
Condition and preparation
All tiles are reclaimed antiques and are fully prepared for reuse. They have been carefully cleaned, desalinated and any soot residues have been removed. Each order is hand-selected to ensure a harmonious appearance in colour tone, glaze and surface character, making them ready for direct installation.
If your project requires cut tiles, we can provide designated tiles of this type at a reduced price. These are tiles with more visible imperfections that are ideal for cutting, helping preserve intact historical pieces from unnecessary alteration.
Tile variety and stock
This collection consists of ornament tiles featuring the Stars pattern in blue and manganese. While each tile is decorative in its own right, the complete design becomes fully visible when several tiles are installed together. The central stars, the larger stars formed by the corners and the small floral corner motifs combine to create a balanced geometric composition.
Subtle variations in the hand-painted manganese decoration ensure that every tile retains its individual character despite the partially transfer-printed design. Availability may vary depending on current stock levels. For the most up-to-date stock information, please refer to the Quantity indication (pcs) shown on the right-hand side of this page.
Complementing tiles
These tiles are best appreciated when installed in larger groups, allowing both the central star motif and the larger star pattern formed by the corners to develop across the wall surface.
They combine beautifully with plain white antique wall tiles dating from around 1900.
Tile size
Each tile measures approximately 13 × 13 cm / 5.1" × 5.1" and at average 7 to 8 mm's thick / 0.3".
As the tiles are handmade and antique, slight variations in size and thickness are to be expected and contribute to their authentic character.
