English Chintz, 19th century

These antique Delft wall tiles feature the 'English Chintz' ornament and date from the 19th century. The design is characterised by its richly decorated floral motifs and intricate arrangement of repeating elements. Inspired by the decorative textiles known as chintz, this pattern reflects the growing influence of international ornamental styles on Dutch tile production during the 19th century. The complete design emerges when multiple tiles are combined, revealing an elaborate composition that demonstrates the decorative sophistication of late Delftware.

Condition and preparation

All tiles are reclaimed antiques and are fully prepared for reuse. They have been carefully cleaned, desalinated and any soot residues have been removed. Each order is hand-selected to ensure a harmonious appearance in colour tone, glaze and surface character, making them ready for direct installation. If your project requires cut tiles, we can provide designated tiles of this type at a reduced price. These are tiles with more visible imperfections that are ideal for cutting, helping preserve intact historical pieces from unnecessary alteration.

Tile variety and stock

This collection consists of English Chintz ornament tiles painted in manganese. While each individual tile forms part of the overall composition, the full decorative effect becomes visible when at least 16 tiles are installed together. The repeating nature of the design creates an elegant and richly detailed wall surface.

A significant quantity of this manganese version is currently available, making these tiles particularly suitable for medium-sized tiling projects. Similar and closely related versions of this design are also available in other colours. Complementing tiles

These tiles are best showcased when used together in larger groups, allowing the complete English Chintz pattern to emerge. They combine beautifully with plain white antique wall tiles (witjes), both plain white 1st quality and plain white 2nd quality, creating a balanced composition that highlights the richness of the ornament.

Related colour variations of the English Chintz design can also be incorporated into a project, offering additional decorative possibilities while maintaining a coherent aesthetic.

Tile size

Each tile measures about 13 x 13 cm (5.1” x 5.1”) and is roughly 7–8 mm (0.3”) thick. As the tiles are handmade and antique, slight variations in size and thickness are to be expected and contribute to their authentic character.
