Overview
PCM-21 | Large Ox-head
The large ox-head corner motif (PCM-21) is a bold variation of the classic ox-head motif, known for its distinctive shape resembling an ox’s head with horns. First introduced in the 17th century, this version was mainly used in the first half of the century, before the smaller PCM-20 became more dominant in later years. The larger scale of PCM-21 makes it a striking choice, adding depth and character to tiled surfaces.
This motif can be used on its own, combined with plain tiles, or paired with decorated Delft tiles. It is also available in our hand-painted decorated series, offering a range of design possibilities.
The photos on this page show the large ox-head corner motif (PCM-21) in Delft blue, painted on the grey mix with pinholes but no crackled finish. These optional enhancements can be added to achieve a more aged and authentic look.
Pinholes in the corners
Pinholes were a common feature in Delft tile production before approximately 1860. Wooden boards with stabilizing pins were used during shaping, leaving small indentations in the clay. This historical detail enhances the authenticity of the tile and is present on the tiles shown in the photos.
Crackled finish
Crazing, or fine surface cracks, naturally appears on antique Delft tiles over time. This optional feature can be added to create an aged look, while a smooth finish offers a cleaner, more contemporary aesthetic.

A timeless tradition
The ox-head motif was one of the most widely used corner motifs in the 17th century. While the larger PCM-21 version was more common in the first half of the century, the smaller PCM-20 became increasingly popular in later years. This design was reintroduced on a large scale in the 20th century, making it one of the most recognizable Delft tile corner motifs today.
Product disclaimer
These Delft tiles are made using traditional methods and are hand-painted by up to five artists, resulting in slight variations in color, size, and design. While not machine-made to uniform precision, they meet high-quality standards and are suitable for most indoor installations. Their craftsmanship ensures they will last for decades, if not centuries.
