Overview
These antique Delft ornament wall tiles depict the decorative Signet motif, one of the rarest geometric designs found in Dutch tile production of the 18th century. The interlacing ribbon-like pattern creates an elegant and timeless appearance, while the repeating design allows individual tiles to merge seamlessly into a larger decorative composition.
These type of tiles were produced in many different variations throughout the 18th century, reflecting the popularity of this ornamental style during the period. Their balanced geometry and decorative character make them particularly suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
The manganese background was applied using a traditional 'spattechniek' (splatter technique), rather than being painted by hand. During this process, the decorative motif itself was created in reserve: the intertwined Signet pattern was left unpainted while the manganese pigment was carefully applied around it. This technique results in the contrast between the white ornament and the rich manganese-coloured background.
Condition and preparation
These antique Delft tiles have been carefully inspected and prepared by our specialists. The tiles are in good antique condition, displaying the minor signs of age and use that can be expected from original 18th-century wall tiles. Any superficial wear, small edge flakes and minor imperfections contribute to their authenticity and historical character.
Tile variety and stock
The photograph shown represents the type of tiles available. As these are original antique Delft tiles, slight variations in colour intensity, dimensions and the application of the splatter decoration may occur. These subtle differences are characteristic of handmade antique tiles and contribute to the unique appearance of each installation.
Please contact us for current availability. Depending on the quantity available, these tiles can be suitable for both smaller decorative projects and larger wall installations.
Complementing tiles
These highly decorative Signet tiles can be used to create complete repeating wall coverings or combined with antique plain white Delft tiles (witjes) to achieve a more restrained appearance. Our specialists are happy to advise on design possibilities and help determine the most suitable layout for your project.
Tile size
The tiles measure approximately 13 × 13 cm (approximately 5.1 × 5.1 inches) and at average 7 to 8 mm's / 0.3" thick. As with all antique Delft tiles, minor size variations may occur due to the traditional manufacturing process.
