Overview
This late 19th- to early 20th-century Delft wall tile was made by Royal Tichelaar Makkum and features the distinctive 'spider' corner motif. Designs composed solely of corner motifs became popular only around 1900; earlier Delft tiles almost always included a central scene. The clean surface and repeating corner pattern give these tiles a subtle, rhythmic appearance, making them well suited for medium-sized interior projects where a refined Delft character is desired. All tiles available belong to the same firing and match closely in tone and finish.
Condition and preparation
Each tile is carefully cleaned, desalinated and freed of soot, fully prepared for direct reuse. The condition of Utrecht witjes is most comparable to our 1st quality selection: ranging from perfect examples to those with only minor wear, always selected to meet our high standards. If cut tiles are needed, we can provide pieces with heavier wear at a reduced rate to preserve intact historical examples.
Tile variety and stock
We hold a large batch from one firing, offering an unusually consistent group of antique tiles. Colours range from a soft off-white to a pale greyish tone, typical for Tichelaar tiles from around 1900. The spider motif appears crisp and evenly painted across the batch. The photos show a representative selection; natural variation in glaze tone and ageing is to be expected within authentic antique stock.
Complementing tiles
These tiles pair well with antique witjes from around 1900. Their understated pattern works particularly well in kitchens, hallways, and bathrooms where a calm but characteristic Delft look is desired.
Tile size
Each tile measures about 13 x 13 cm (5.1” x 5.1”) and is roughly 7–8 mm (0.3”) thick. As antique handmade pieces, slight differences in size and thickness are entirely normal and part of their authentic charm.
A downloadable installation guide is available soon, explaining how to handle thickness differences and other practical details during installation.
