Overview
These close to 400 year old (c. 1650) hand-painted Delft antique wall tiles depict stylised flowers in in a beautiful range of flowers. This charming set consists of six tiles, each showing a different floral composition, including a tulip, carnation and fritillaria. The flowers are painted in lively shades of blue, green and warm manganese tones, reflecting the decorative richness of mid-17th-century Delft tile production. All tiles are decorated with the iconic 'ox-head' corner motif, one of the most recognisable corner decorations of the period. As the tiles originate from the same firing and were produced by a single pottery, they form a harmonious and visually consistent ensemble.
Condition and preparation
All tiles are reclaimed antiques and are fully prepared for reuse. They have been cleaned, desalinated and any soot residues have been removed. Each tile has been inspected to ensure it meets our quality standards and is suitable for installation.
Tile variety and stock
This set consists of six tiles depicting various flowers, each painted with its own distinctive shape and composition. Despite the variation in the flowers themselves, the tiles share a consistent style, palette and corner decoration. As this is a set originating from a single firing, availability is limited to these six tiles.
Complementing tiles
These tiles are best showcased when used together as a set, as their shared painting style and 'ox-head' corner motifs create a harmonious wall composition. They can also be combined with other 17th-century Delft tiles featuring ox-head corner motifs. In addition, pairing them with plain white antique tiles (witjes), both first and second quality, can introduce visual balance within a larger tiling installation.
Tile size
Each tile measures approximately 13 × 13 cm (5.1” × 5.1”) and 1 cm / 0.4” thick. As the tiles are handmade and antique, slight variations in size and thickness are to be expected and contribute to their authentic character.
