Overview
An exceptionally decorative type of early 17th-century Delft wall tile, painted in a lively palette of blue, orange, green, and manganese. Known as “Star Tulips”, these tiles form a complex star-shaped pattern surrounded by tulips, grapes, and pomegranates. Produced around 1600–1630, they are over 400 years old and reflect both the artistry and abundance of the Dutch Golden Age - a period when craftsmanship, trade and colour flourished in unison.
Use and applications
Originally adorning fireplaces, these tiles remain perfectly suited for the same uses today. Their rhythmic pattern and rich ornamentation make them equally at home in restoration projects, classic interiors, or as a decorative feature wall, panel, or accent installation in a more contemporary setting. Wherever used, they bring a sense of history, colour and refinement to the space.
Condition and preparation
All tiles are fully prepared for reuse - carefully cleaned, desalinated and soot removed. Each order is hand-selected to ensure the best possible balance in tone, glaze and surface character.
If cut tiles are needed, we can supply designated pieces with more visible wear at a reduced rate, helping preserve intact historical examples.
Tile variety and stock
The photo shows 16 tiles representing this type. We currently hold around 200 tiles in stock. Because each piece is handmade and centuries old, colour intensity, brushwork and glaze tone vary naturally. Larger selections will display more diversity, enhancing the authentic and layered character of an installation.
Tile size
Each tile measures approximately 13 x 13 cm / 5.1” x 5.1” and 1 cm / 0.4”) thick, with small differences typical for handmade 17th-century work.
Product disclaimer
Due to their age and handmade nature, antique tiles show natural variations in tone, glaze and size. While we cannot offer a 100% guarantee, each tile has been restored to the most optimal condition and meets our high quality standards.
