Overview
These Delft wall tiles were made around 1900 by Dutch pottery Tichelaar in the city of Makkum. What makes them very special, is that they are not glazed in the iconic tin-based white glaze, but that they are glazed in a solid blue colour. We have only come across a 17th century batch ones and these are the only tiles we have come across that date from around 1900. Fortunately, we have quite a significant number of these tiles available, making them interesting to use for small to medium sized installation.
Use and applications
These tiles were traditionally installed in kitchens, hallways and fireplace surrounds across Friesland and the northern provinces — and they remain perfectly suited for those same applications today.
Beyond their traditional use, these tiles are equally striking in modern interiors, for example as a statement wall, decorative backsplash, or accent panel. Whether used in restoration projects, classic homes, or contemporary designs, they offer a timeless connection between past and present.
Combinations
These tiles can well be mixed with our antique plain white Delft tiles dating from around 1900. A checkerboard, or different pattern, can easily be created.
Condition and preparation
All tiles are fully prepared for reuse, carefully cleaned, desalinated and soot removed. Each order is always curated by one of our specialists and the tiles are thoroughly inspected before we pack and ship them.
If your project requires cut tiles, we can provide, if available, designated tiles of this type at a reduced price. These are tiles with more visible imperfections that are ideal for cutting, helping preserve intact historical pieces from unnecessary alteration.
Tile size
Each tile measures about 13 x 13 cm (5.1” x 5.1”) and is roughly 7–8 mm (0.3”) thick. As antique handmade pieces, slight differences in size and thickness are entirely normal and part of their authentic charm.
A downloadable installation guide is available soon, explaining how to handle thickness differences and other practical details during installation.
